MCP connects agents to tools and data. A2A connects independent agents. In coding tools, ACP means Agent Client Protocol, while IBM's older Agent Communication Protocol was merged into A2A and archived on 2025-08-27\. The MCP specification dated 2026-07-28 has a stateless core, and A2A's stable v1.0 is hosted as a Growth Stage project by the Linux Foundation-directed Agentic AI Foundation.

## Key facts

* Model Context Protocol (MCP) standardizes how agents connect to tools, APIs, data sources, and other external resources. Its 2026-07-28 specification has a stateless core and deprecates the legacy HTTP+SSE transport.
* Agent2Agent (A2A) standardizes communication between independent agents, including capability discovery through Agent Cards and long-running task collaboration. A2A's stable v1.0 shipped in March 2026.
* A2A was originally developed by Google and donated to the Linux Foundation. On 2026-08-27, it became a Growth Stage project of the Agentic AI Foundation, which operates under Linux Foundation direction.
* IBM's Agent Communication Protocol (ACP) merged with A2A under the Linux Foundation. GitHub shows the `i-am-bee/acp` repository as archived on 2025-08-27.
* Agent Client Protocol (ACP) standardizes editor-to-agent communication. Its stable wire version is 1 as of 2026-10-06, with JSON-RPC over stdio for local agents and HTTP or WebSocket for remote agents.
* Zed announced ACP with Google's Gemini CLI on 2025-08-27\. JetBrains announced its collaboration with Zed on 2025-10-06, and the ACP Agent Registry launched on 2026-01-28.
* Three technical articles published between 2026-09-22 and 2026-09-26 used ACP differently: Octomind referenced Zed's editor protocol, Skala cited IBM's archived merger, and Bonjoy treated IBM's ACP as an active third standard.

## How MCP, A2A, and Agent Client Protocol divide the work

The protocols sit at different boundaries in an agent system:

| Protocol | Boundary | Current status |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Model Context Protocol (MCP) | Agent to tools and data | Specification 2026-07-28; stateless core; legacy HTTP+SSE deprecated |
| Agent2Agent (A2A) | Agent to peer agent | Stable v1.0; AAIF Growth Stage project since 2026-08-27 |
| Agent Client Protocol (ACP) | Editor to coding agent | Stable wire version 1; local stdio and remote HTTP or WebSocket |
| Agent Communication Protocol (IBM ACP) | Historical agent communication | Merged into A2A; repository archived on 2025-08-27 |

MCP handles an agent's connection to a tool, API, data source, or other external resource. The 2026-07-28 release made the protocol core stateless. Requests carry the information needed for the exchange instead of relying on a protocol-level session, and the release deprecates the older HTTP+SSE transport. Use MCP when the remote endpoint exposes a capability that the agent calls or reads.

A2A handles collaboration between independent agents. An agent can read an Agent Card to discover another agent's capabilities and contact information, then delegate a task and exchange updates or results. A2A is for a remote participant that accepts responsibility for work, not for a discrete function call.

Agent Client Protocol handles the editor boundary. It lets an IDE or code editor start and supervise a coding agent, show diffs, and mediate the agent's access to the workspace. Local agents run as editor subprocesses over JSON-RPC on stdio. Remote agents can communicate over HTTP or WebSocket.

## Why two protocols use the name ACP

IBM's Agent Communication Protocol came from the BeeAI project. IBM launched it in March 2025 as a REST-based protocol with agent discovery and run endpoints such as `/agents` and `/runs`. On 2025-08-27, its repository was archived. A 2025-08-29 Linux Foundation AI & Data announcement said ACP was merging into A2A and that the ACP team would wind down independent development. IBM's ACP is historical context for A2A, not a separate protocol to implement.

Zed's Agent Client Protocol is a different project. On 2025-08-27, Zed announced ACP with Google's Gemini CLI as its initial reference integration. JetBrains announced its collaboration with Zed on 2025-10-06\. On 2026-01-28, JetBrains said the ACP Agent Registry was live in JetBrains IDEs and Zed, so compatible agents could be discovered and installed without a custom editor integration.

The dates are easy to confuse because both protocols used ACP in 2025\. The noun beside the acronym is the useful clue. "Editor" or "IDE" points to Agent Client Protocol. "Agent communication" in an old BeeAI document points to IBM's archived protocol. A peer-agent task points to A2A, and a tool or data connection points to MCP.

## What the September 2026 comparison posts mean

Three articles published between 2026-09-22 and 2026-09-26 split the acronym in different ways:

1. **Octomind, published on 2026-09-22:** "A2A, ACP and MCP: The Three Protocols Every AI Agent Stack Needs" uses ACP for editor-to-agent communication, MCP for agent-to-tool connections, and A2A for agent-to-agent delegation. It also notes that IBM's earlier ACP merged into A2A.
2. **Skala, published on 2026-09-23:** "MCP vs A2A: Agent Protocol Layers Explained" uses MCP and A2A as its two main layers. It correctly describes IBM's ACP as archived and folded into A2A, but does not discuss the editor-facing Agent Client Protocol.
3. **Bonjoy, published on 2026-09-26:** "MCP vs A2A vs ACP: three protocols shaping how AI agents work" treats IBM's ACP as an active standard. That conflicts with the 2025-08-27 archive and merger, and the article does not mention Agent Client Protocol.
