Update (2026-10-07): Fact-checked the sidebar, connectors, app-specific capabilities, limits, and security controls against Anthropic's announcement and Help Center.
Claude for Google Workspace is a public-beta add-on announced on 2026-10-06 that edits the Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide already open in your browser. It reads the file and the selected text, cells, or slides, then writes changes in place under your Google identity. Separate Google Workspace connectors let Claude create or edit files from a chat pane when the work spans multiple files.
Claude for Google Workspace: key facts
- Anthropic announced the add-on and connectors on 2026-10-06. The add-on is in public beta on paid plans, including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise.
- One Google Workspace Marketplace install covers Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Open a file, then choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
- The sidebar reads the open file and the selected text, cells, or slides. It is limited to that file unless you enable connectors.
- Direct edits appear in Google Version history under the user's name. Undo reverses the last change, and restoring an earlier version rolls back older edits.
- Ask before edits is the default. Accept all edits continues through ordinary content edits without pausing.
- Links, web images, and actions that remove access always trigger a Security review step; there is no always-allow option for them.
How does Claude for Google Workspace edit an open file?
The entry point is the file, not a separate Claude browser tab. Install the Marketplace app, open a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide, and select Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. The sidebar can use the active selection to narrow the task. Anthropic's announcement describes the core behavior this way: “Claude can read the doc, sheet, or deck you have open ... and make changes directly in the file.”
The three editors expose different useful operations:
- Google Docs: Claude can rewrite text, restyle headings, and turn material into a table. For a larger rewrite, it can show suggestion-like cards that identify the passage to change; you apply or dismiss each card. Ordinary sidebar edits remain normal document edits recorded in Version history.
- Google Sheets: Claude can write formulas, build pivot tables and native charts, add tabs, and pull a range into Python for joins or data cleaning before writing the result back. Connected Sheets tabs backed by BigQuery are a boundary: extract the rows into a regular tab first.
- Google Slides: Claude can build slides from the deck's existing layouts and themes, then flag overlapping elements, content that runs off the slide, or text that is hard to read. Charts it creates are inserted as images rather than linked Sheets charts, so changed source values do not update them automatically.
The sidebar is a separate editing surface from Google Docs edits Markdown files in place without file conversion: both start from an open Google file, but this add-on sends an editing request to Claude and writes the result back into the file.
How do Claude for Google Workspace approval modes work?
Ask before edits is the default and pauses each ordinary content change until you click Allow. Accept all edits applies ordinary content edits without stopping. Both modes still pause for actions that affect links, web images, or file access.
Mode or control | What happens |
|---|---|
Ask before edits | Claude shows a plain-language approval card before an ordinary edit. |
Accept all edits | Claude continues through ordinary content edits without asking after every change. |
Security review | Claude asks before adding a link, inserting an image from a web address, or removing someone's access. There is no always-allow choice. |
The add-on cannot share a file, give someone access, change ownership, create menus, schedule automations, or load arbitrary web pages into the file. For a separate Claude permission model, compare What Claude Code plan mode, auto mode, and bypass mode still allow.
How do Claude for Google Workspace connectors differ from the sidebar?
The sidebar begins with a file already open in Google. The connectors begin in Claude chat: paste a Google file link or ask Claude to create a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slides deck, then work in a pane beside the conversation.
Capability | Sidebar add-on | Connectors in Claude |
|---|---|---|
Starting point | An open file in Docs, Sheets, or Slides | Claude on the web or Claude Desktop |
Scope | The open file and its selection; other sources require enabled connectors | Files the connected Google account can access, subject to its sharing permissions |
Create files | Starts from the file you opened | Can create new Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files |
Live editing | Writes to the file as the signed-in user | Opens a pane where you and Claude can edit the same file at the same time |
Comments | The add-on does not read, reply to, or resolve native Docs comments | The connectors can read comments and suggestions in Google Docs |
Organization control | Google Workspace Marketplace allowlisting or admin install | Team and Enterprise owners or primary owners enable the connectors |
Use the sidebar for a focused pass on one open file. Use the connectors when the request starts in chat, needs a new file, or spans several Google files.
What limits and security controls apply to Claude for Google Workspace?
- Execution time: Google limits one extension operation to six minutes. Break a large reformatting job into smaller requests, such as one tab or ten slides at a time.
- Browser: Anthropic's troubleshooting guide says Firefox or strict tracking protection can prevent the sidebar from communicating with the document. Its supported fallback is Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
- Google permissions: The Help Center says the first sign-in asks for two Google permissions and that the extension does not request access to Drive, Gmail, Calendar, contacts, or network requests from the file.
- Enterprise controls: Anthropic's 2026-10-06 announcement says Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK), and OpenTelemetry audit export apply to the add-on on Enterprise plans.
- Chat history: The sidebar conversation is saved locally in the browser per file. It does not sync across devices or browsers, and a private window or copy of the file starts with no previous chat.
Claude can edit the file in front of you, while Undo and Version history provide the recovery path. Review proposed changes before accepting them, especially in files whose content came from someone else.
