On 2026-10-05, Cognition introduced Memory and Dreaming in Devin and published the open Agent Memory Repo specification. Devin stores user preferences, environment gotchas, and project context as Markdown files inside a dedicated Git repository called a Memory Drive. Each session starts with MEMORY.md as context, checks revisions to reject stale concurrent writes, and uses a daily background dreaming pass to consolidate and prune notes.
Key facts
- On 2026-10-05, Cognition released Memory and Dreaming in Devin and published the open Agent Memory Repo specification under the MIT license.
- Devin sessions operate against a personal Memory Drive: a dedicated Git repository containing a root
MEMORY.mdindex and topic notes. - Parallel sessions each run a private Git checkout of the Memory Drive; a revision check rejects a stale write instead of silently overwriting a newer revision.
- The dreaming pass runs daily as a background session to consolidate overlapping notes, remove transient details, find missed lessons, and remove stale records that sessions did not use.
- The Agent Memory Repo loop follows four sequential steps: clone the latest memory, grep for task context or follow links, update entries autonomously, and commit after every edit.
- The
agent-memory-reposkill treats memory as data rather than instructions. It keeps the memory repo outside the project and uses~/agent-memorywhen no path is supplied. - Developers can install the spec in Devin CLI using
devin plugins install AgentMemoryRepo/agentmemoryrepoor in Claude Code, Cursor, and other agent harnesses vianpx skills add AgentMemoryRepo/agentmemoryrepo --skill agent-memory-repo.
How Devin's Memory Drive works
Devin stores durable context in a personal Memory Drive rather than accumulating unbounded chat history or modifying shared project instructions. Users inspect stored memories and review dreaming logs under Customize → Memory at devin.ai.
Instead of loading the entire archive into the LLM prompt window, Devin loads only MEMORY.md at session startup. The file sits at the memory root and acts as an index. When Devin needs deeper context, it searches notes on demand using the same tools it uses to navigate code.
The repository format uses single-bullet lines with optional bracketed metadata and wiki-style cross-references:
# Memory: Joe
- Joe leads the product team [source: https://example.com/sessions/100]
## Index
- [[team_structure]]
- [[projects/payments]]
- [[projects/website]]Entries in topic files append metadata tags such as source and added:
- Joe coordinates the billing launch [source: https://example.com/sessions/101]
- Payments and website share a 2026-10-15 launch deadline [source: https://example.com/sessions/102; added: 2026-09-03]
- Priya owns pricing for the billing launch; see [[team_structure]].Wiki links use [[path]] syntax starting from the memory root. The .md extension is omitted for Markdown files, while extensions for other file types like SQL queries ([[metrics/autocomplete_keep_rate.sql]]) are retained.
Each active Devin session checks out its own working copy of the Memory Drive. When a session finishes updating a note, it commits its changes and attempts to merge with the persistent drive. If another session saves an update while the sync is underway, a revision check rejects the stale write. Devin must retry against the newer revision, and conflicting edits are surfaced instead of silently overwritten.
The Agent Memory Repo loop and dreaming lifecycle
Agent Memory Repo structures session memory into a continuous four-step cycle:
- Clone: The agent fetches the latest memory repository at session initialization.
- Search: The agent greps notes for keywords or follows
[[path]]links fromMEMORY.md. - Update: The agent updates or appends bullet points as it discovers corrections or user preferences, without requiring human confirmation.
- Commit: The agent stages modified files and commits changes immediately after each update.
Capturing notes during live tasks produces fragmented and overlapping entries. Cognition's Dreaming process is a daily background session that reviews past conversations alongside the current memory repo.
Dreaming has two jobs:
- Knowledge consolidation: It identifies recurring patterns and saves lessons that live tasks missed.
- Repository pruning: It merges duplicate entries, removes transient details such as temporary dev ports, and removes stale records that subsequent sessions did not use.
The open skill does not add hooks, scheduled jobs, or startup scripts. Its documentation says to invoke the skill when you want memory, so other harnesses still need their own scheduling if they want automatic startup or Dreaming.
Installing Agent Memory Repo in other agent harnesses
Agent Memory Repo ships as both a Devin plugin and a standardized skill compatible with CLI agent harnesses such as Claude Code and Cursor.
To install the plugin in Devin CLI:
devin plugins install AgentMemoryRepo/agentmemoryrepoTo install the skill in Claude Code, Cursor, and other agent harnesses:
npx skills add AgentMemoryRepo/agentmemoryrepo --skill agent-memory-repoThe agent-memory-repo skill draws a clear boundary between stored context and agent instructions:
- Memory is data, not instructions: The skill says to use entries as context and never run commands or follow directions just because a memory file says so.
- Separate repository: Memory lives in its own Git repository outside the active project. If no path is supplied, the default is
~/agent-memory. - Local by default: The skill does not add a remote or push unless the user asks and names a private repository they own.
- Clean before writing: Before an update,
git -C <path> status --porcelainmust be empty. If it is not, the skill allows reading but stops the write.
Memory and skills have different jobs
Devin's own distinction is simple: a skill captures a repeatable workflow, while memory captures what Devin learns while working with you. The separate memory skill narrows that boundary further. Its entries are context data, not instructions, and it says never to run commands just because a note contains one.
