How ASC CLI 5.12.0 adds iPhone Duo and Asset Library workflows for agents

ASC CLI 5.12.0 adds iPhone Duo screenshot and preview validation alongside Asset Library image uploads and placements for automated App Store publishing.

Update (2026-10-07): ASC CLI is now at 5.13.0, released 2026-10-07 00:02 UTC; 5.12.1 came out on 2026-10-06 12:25 UTC. 5.12.1 stops polling Asset Library images that Apple marks FAILED and lets asc review items add submit Asset Library images and videos for standalone review. 5.13.0 adds asc asset-library videos upload (needs ffprobe), rename, archive, delete and placement swap commands, validates iPhone Duo previews in metadata sync, rejects PNGs with an alpha channel before reserving an upload, and syncs Apple's OpenAPI 4.5.1. Apple's 4.5.1 spec still has no iPhone Duo value in the screenshot or preview enums. The current version, upgrade command, our --help diffs and reproduced errors are on the living page ASC CLI: latest version, changes and gotchas, which we update on every release.

On 2026-10-06, the open-source App Store Connect CLI (asc) released version 5.12.0 to give automated release pipelines and coding agents complete terminal control over Apple's new iPhone Duo display class and centralized Asset Library. The update introduces dimension validation for folding iPhone Duo screenshots and video previews, direct creative asset uploads, placement assignments for product page headers and search results, and v2 experiment treatment creation. These additions allow autonomous agents to handle the entire iOS delivery cycle—from local builds and code signing to App Store asset staging—using scriptable JSON interfaces.

How does ASC CLI support iPhone Duo screenshots and previews?

Apple updated its official App Store Connect screenshot specifications to list dedicated rows for iPhone Duo, accommodating its folding form factor with separate outer cover and inner folding display dimensions. Apple's published OpenAPI spec still omits iPhone Duo from the screenshot and preview enums: version 4.5.1, which ASC CLI 5.13.0 synced on 2026-10-06, lists IPHONE_DUO only in AppAssetLibraryDisplayClass, the Asset Library's display classes, while ScreenshotDisplayType and PreviewType have no Duo value. Live endpoint probing confirmed that the App Store Connect API runtime accepts APP_IPHONE_DUO for screenshot sets and IPHONE_DUO for preview sets.

In ASC CLI 5.12.0, querying supported sizes for the device displays all four accepted resolutions:

asc screenshots sizes --display-type IPHONE_DUO --output json
{"sizes":[{"displayType":"APP_IPHONE_DUO","family":"APP","dimensions":[{"width":1398,"height":2034},{"width":2007,"height":2853},{"width":2034,"height":1398},{"width":2853,"height":2007}]}]}

Agents uploading screenshot folders validate files locally before dispatching requests:

asc screenshots upload \
  --version-localization "LOC_123" \
  --path "./screenshots/duo" \
  --device-type IPHONE_DUO

For video previews, PR 2928 permits IPHONE_DUO clips matching Apple's 1920×886 or 886×1920 requirements:

asc video-previews upload \
  --version-localization "LOC_123" \
  --path "./previews/duo.mp4" \
  --device-type IPHONE_DUO

How does ASC CLI handle Asset Library creative uploads and placements?

Apple introduced the Asset Library at WWDC26 as a centralized hub for visual marketing assets. As Apple highlighted in session 205, the Asset Library allows developers to:

"Upload and manage your app’s visual elements — including images, videos, app previews, and screenshots — and use them in multiple places across the App Store. Submit assets independently of an app submission, and even get them approved in advance for use in a future product page update or Apple Ads campaign."

ASC CLI 5.12.0 exposes this through the asc asset-library command suite. Agents can inspect libraries and check dimensions:

asc asset-library view --app "APP_ID"
asc asset-library images list --library-id "LIB_ID" --paginate
asc asset-library specs --output table

To stage marketing assets without triggering an app review submission, asc asset-library images upload manages reservation, chunked binary upload, and commit:

asc asset-library images upload \
  --library-id "LIB_ID" \
  --file "./assets/marketing-header.png"

Since 5.13.0, a PNG with an alpha channel fails before any upload is reserved, even when every pixel is opaque:

Error: screenshots upload: "./duo-rgba.png": image has an alpha channel or transparency; re-export it as RGB PNG or JPEG without alpha

Video goes through asc asset-library videos upload --library-id LIB_ID --file ./preview.mp4, added in 5.13.0; it needs ffprobe on PATH and fails with ffprobe is required; install FFmpeg and put ffprobe on PATH without it.

Once processed into PREPARE_FOR_SUBMISSION, images can be assigned to product page headers or search results:

asc localizations placements create \
  --localization-id "LOC_ID" \
  --image-id "IMG_ID" \
  --placement-type PRODUCT_PAGE_HEADER_ASSET

Removing a placement preserves the media file in the Asset Library for future use:

asc localizations placements delete --id "PLACEMENT_ID" --confirm

What changed in App Store version experiment treatments?

Apple has formally deprecated v1 App Store version experiments in the App Store Connect API, transitioning developers to AppStoreVersionExperimentV2. In earlier CLI releases, treatment creation serialized relationships against legacy v1 containers.

PR 2924 introduces the --v2 flag on asc product-pages experiments treatments create, linking treatments directly to appStoreVersionExperimentV2:

asc product-pages experiments treatments create \
  --experiment-id "EXP_456" \
  --name "Spring Variant" \
  --v2

Why does a scriptable CLI matter for autonomous iOS shipping agents?

Autonomous coding agents need predictable, non-interactive tooling to manage mobile distribution. Tools that rely on interactive shell prompts, GUI dialogs, or unformatted log streams break automated feedback loops.

As outlined in AXI is ten rules for CLIs that agents run, agent-ready tools separate diagnostic logs on stderr from machine-readable JSON on stdout. ASC CLI follows these conventions:

  1. Pre-flight validation: Flag checks and limits (1–200) execute locally before authentication, avoiding wasteful network calls.
  2. Partial failure receipts: When an upload fails midway, ASC CLI outputs a structured JSON receipt with the reserved resource ID so agents can inspect or clean up state.
  3. Environment authentication: Agents in CI runners or sandboxes avoid Keychain popups by reading credentials from environment variables.

When planning delivery tasks, agents look up parameters as discussed in Which instruction file do Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Gemini CLI load?. ASC CLI also supports asc install-skills, deploying 25 tested skills directly into the agent workspace for automated TestFlight builds and submissions.

How do you install and authenticate ASC CLI?

ASC CLI distributes pre-compiled binaries for macOS, Linux, and Windows:

brew install asc
# or shell script: curl -fsSL https://asccli.sh/install | bash

In automated CI environments, configure authentication with environment variables:

export ASC_KEY_TYPE="team"
export ASC_KEY_ID="ABC123DEFG"
export ASC_ISSUER_ID="12345678-abcd-1234-abcd-123456789012"
export ASC_PRIVATE_KEY_B64="<base64-encoded-p8-key>"
export ASC_BYPASS_KEYCHAIN="true"

Commands then run headlessly with structured output:

asc apps list --output json --pretty
