How do Claude Pro and Max limits reset for Claude Code?

Claude Code shares Claude's five-hour and weekly limits; use Settings > Usage on the web or Desktop to apply an available free reset.

Claude Code uses the same Pro or Max usage budget as claude.ai. The included session limit resets five hours after you reach it, while the weekly limit resets on the fixed day and time assigned to your account. If Anthropic offers a free limit reset, apply it in Settings > Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop, not in the terminal or IDE.

Key facts about Claude Code limit resets

  • Pro and Max usage is shared across Claude on the web, Desktop, mobile, and Claude Code in the terminal and supported IDEs.
  • Each plan has a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit. The five-hour limit resets every five hours once reached; the weekly limit uses a fixed account-specific day and time.
  • An available limit reset can restore either limit immediately. The "Reset for free" control is on the web and in Claude Desktop, not in Claude Mobile or Claude Code terminal and IDE sessions.
  • Eligible Claude Code 2.1.277 or later accounts may get a Wrap-Up Allowance when a response is already in progress at the five-hour limit.
  • Usage credits can continue work at standard API rates. They do not change the five-hour reset timing.
  • Claude Code 2.1.234 or later interactive sessions can wait and continue after a reset, subject to the session and credential limits in the documentation.

Shared five-hour and weekly limits in Claude Code

A Pro or Max subscription covers Claude on the web, Desktop, and mobile apps and Claude Code in the terminal. Supported IDE extensions, including VS Code, Cursor, other VS Code forks, and JetBrains IDEs, use the same limits when they use the same Claude account.

The two clocks work independently:

  1. Five-hour session limit: The included session allowance resets every five hours after you reach it.
  2. Weekly usage limit: The weekly allowance resets on the fixed day and time assigned to your account. The assigned day and time do not move when you start a session or subscribe.

Anthropic says regional prices and plan details can change. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, Claude Code uses that API key instead of the Claude subscription and bills API usage to the associated Console account.

The Wrap-Up Allowance in Claude Code 2.1.277

The Wrap-Up Allowance is a small, capped amount of extra work that Claude Code may use when it reaches the five-hour limit during a response already in progress. The session shows:

Usage limit reached · wrapping up.

Eligibility requires a Pro or Max plan, or a Team plan with a Premium seat, an account in good standing, Claude Code 2.1.277 or later, minimum account and organization age, and inclusion in Anthropic's rollout. The minimum age is not published, and rollout eligibility is not universal.

The allowance applies only to a response that was already running when the five-hour limit arrived. A new prompt sent after the limit does not trigger it. Pro accounts can receive it up to once per weekly usage period. Max accounts and Team Premium seats can receive it at each five-hour limit within their weekly limits. Wrap-up usage counts toward the weekly limit and does not increase that limit.

The allowance does not apply to API-key or third-party cloud-provider sessions, such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI, or to chats in the Claude app. It is automatic when available and cannot be requested, saved, or carried over.

Applying a Claude limit reset from Settings

Anthropic gives limit resets occasionally to eligible plans. The offer determines whether the five-hour session limit or the weekly limit returns to full. The normal weekly reset still happens on its assigned day and time.

To use an available reset:

  1. Open Claude on the web or open Claude Desktop.
  2. Go to Settings > Usage and find the Resets section.
  3. Click Reset for free, then confirm.

The same button can appear in the message shown after you reach a limit. You do not have to wait until a limit is reached to use an offered reset. A reset cannot be undone, does not refund extra usage already billed, and does not change your usage-credit balance. If the offer has an expiry, its date and time appear in Settings > Usage.

The reset control is not available in Claude Mobile or in Claude Code terminal and IDE sessions. Because the limits are shared across the account, a reset applied on the web or in Desktop restores the limits used by Claude Code too.

Claude Code usage credits and automatic continuation

Usage credits let paid Pro, Max 5x, and Max 20x subscribers continue after an included limit by switching to consumption-based billing at standard API rates. If the Wrap-Up Allowance applies, Claude Code uses that included allowance first, then continues on usage credits subject to the configured spending settings. Usage credits do not change when the included five-hour limit resets.

Usage credits are managed in Settings > Usage. Anthropic documents a monthly spending cap, auto-reload settings, and a $2,000 daily redemption limit. The credits are separate from the subscription charge.

Claude Code 2.1.234 or later can wait in an open interactive session signed in with a claude.ai subscription and continue automatically after the usage limit resets. Keep the session open. API-key, cloud-provider, usage-based, background, and -p sessions do not use this subscription reset wait.

The terminal provides a few ways to manage the choice:

/status
/usage
/rate-limit-options

/status shows version, model, account, and connectivity. /usage shows session cost, plan usage limits, and activity statistics. /rate-limit-options offers waiting for the reset, adding usage credits, or upgrading the plan. While an automatic wait is active, the menu also lets you choose Don't continue automatically.

To stay within the included plan allocation, decline API-credit prompts. Anthropic also documents logging out and back in with only Pro or Max credentials so Claude Code does not offer Console API credits for that session.
