What changed in the Codex CLI refresh of September 2026

The September 2026 Codex CLI refresh made fullscreen transcripts default, added voice and worktrees, and added GPT-6.1 Sol plus max and ultra reasoning.

OpenAI's September 2026 Codex CLI refresh changed the terminal UI, added built-in voice and managed worktrees, and expanded the model and reasoning catalogs. Codex CLI 0.157.0 made fullscreen transcripts the default, Codex CLI 0.159.1 made GPT-6.1 Sol the default in the bundled and Amazon Bedrock catalogs, and Python SDK 0.154.0 added max and ultra reasoning values.

Update on 2026-10-06: Codex CLI 0.160.1 was released on 2026-10-05 with one Windows remote MCP environment fix. Its release notes do not list a new user-facing feature, so the feature timeline below ends at Codex CLI 0.160.0.

Key facts

  • Codex CLI 0.156.0 on 2026-09-22 added optional fullscreen /tui, default voice conversations, /usage, and default worktree support.
  • Codex CLI 0.157.0 on 2026-09-25 enabled fullscreen transcripts by default, added the f fork shortcut, started eligible background servers automatically, and added GPT-6 Sol and Luna to the model catalogs.
  • Codex CLI 0.158.0 on 2026-09-28 added copy-on-select and right-click paste settings for the fullscreen TUI while preserving Markdown formatting in copied selections.
  • Codex CLI 0.159.0 on 2026-09-29 added opt-in instant_interrupt and removed automatic prompt suggestions and tui.prompt_suggestions.
  • Codex CLI 0.159.1 on 2026-09-29 made GPT-6.1 Sol the default in the bundled catalog and Amazon Bedrock Mantle and Runtime catalogs.
  • Codex Python SDK 0.154.0 on 2026-09-10 added max and ultra reasoning-effort values.

Codex CLI 0.156.0 and 0.157.0 changed the terminal

Codex CLI 0.156.0 made the fullscreen /tui experience optional. It added transcript search, mouse selection, and right-click copying. Codex CLI 0.157.0 enabled the fullscreen transcript by default and added Shift-click selection. The 2026-09-30 OpenAI community announcement describes the practical effect: older history loads as the user scrolls beyond the terminal's scrollback limit, while the composer stays pinned at the bottom.

Codex CLI 0.158.0 added configuration for copy-on-select and right-click paste. It also preserved Markdown formatting in copied transcript selections. Codex CLI 0.160.0 added transcript selection and middle-click paste for supported local Linux X11 terminals. The version split matters. Installing 0.156.0 exposes /tui; installing 0.157.0 turns it on by default.

Codex CLI 0.156.0 changed how parallel tasks run

Codex CLI 0.156.0 enabled managed worktrees by default and added worktree session creation and status filtering to the agent command center. The OpenAI community announcement names /agents for tracking parallel work and /fork for creating a worktree with the same context and a separate checkout.

Codex CLI 0.156.0 enabled voice conversations by default. Users can toggle voice with F8, choose a voice with /voice settings, and inspect account usage, token totals, and plugin and skill activity with /usage. Codex CLI 0.156.0 also added six terminal themes, Mermaid diagrams, display equations, and /daemon updates. Codex CLI 0.157.0 enabled automatic background-server startup for eligible interactive sessions and kept active voice conversations across thread navigation.

Codex CLI 0.157.0 and 0.159.1 changed model selection

Codex CLI 0.157.0 added GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna to the model catalog, including Amazon Bedrock support and migration prompts for older models. Codex CLI 0.159.1 then made GPT-6.1 Sol the default in the bundled catalog and the Amazon Bedrock Mantle and Runtime catalogs. That release note names those catalogs specifically. It does not support a claim that every provider or workspace uses GPT-6.1 Sol automatically.

The OpenAI Codex changelog dated 2026-09-29 also lists GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex and ChatGPT Work. A configuration that hard-codes gpt-5.5 needs separate attention because the same changelog says GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on 2026-10-14. OpenAI's instruction is to choose an available replacement for the user's plan and client.

Codex Python SDK 0.154.0 added max and ultra

The Python SDK release python-v0.154.0 on 2026-09-10 added max and ultra to the reasoning-effort values. Pull request #39662 records the matching TypeScript and Python SDK type changes. This is a Python SDK release, not a claim that Codex CLI 0.154.0 shipped the same TUI feature set.

Codex CLI 0.158.0 also changed the shortcut behavior. Its changelog includes pull request #48116, "Allow reasoning shortcuts to reach Max." The old statement that the shortcuts stopped at xhigh is therefore not safe for a post verified on 2026-10-06.

What Codex CLI users must change

Existing setup

Change

Installed CLI package

Run npm install -g @openai/codex@latest.

Live steering during a response or long code-mode call

Add instant_interrupt = true only if you want this opt-in behavior.

Automatic follow-up prompts

Remove tui.prompt_suggestions; Codex CLI 0.159.0 removed the setting and the feature.

friendly or pragmatic personality settings

Do not rely on those settings to select a response style; Codex CLI 0.156.0 marked them deprecated.

CI or another environment that should bypass the shared server

Pass --no-daemon; Codex CLI 0.157.0 starts the background server automatically for eligible interactive sessions.

codex mcp-server or codex-mcp-server integrations

Move to codex app-server; the OpenAI changelog records the old command and binary as removed on 2026-09-05 and describes app-server as experimental.

A saved gpt-5.5 model selection

Choose an available replacement before 2026-10-14.
